From Princes to Future King: The Schools That Shaped the British Royal Family

Prince George’s move to Eton College has once again put the spotlight on the education of Britain’s royal family. But where did the other British royals study — and what makes these institutions so famous?

Education has always been an important part of the British royal family’s journey. Over generations, members of the family have attended some of Britain’s most historic and prestigious schools, institutions known not only for academic education but also for developing leadership, independence and public responsibility.

Prince George, the elder son of Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, has now started at Eton College, continuing a family tradition. His father, Prince William, studied at Eton, as did his uncle Prince Harry.

Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, Eton is one of Britain’s best-known independent schools. Located close to Windsor Castle, it has educated generations of influential figures, including 20 British prime ministers. Its reputation comes from a combination of academic standards, centuries-old traditions, extracurricular activities and a powerful alumni network.

For Prince William, Eton was followed by university education at the University of St Andrews, where he studied geography and met Catherine Middleton.

Prince Harry also attended Eton before embarking on his military career.

The previous generation followed a different educational path. King Charles III attended Gordonstoun School in Scotland, the same school attended by his father, Prince Philip. Gordonstoun became known for its emphasis on discipline, resilience, outdoor activities and character development.

The younger generation has taken another route. Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, George’s younger siblings, attend Lambrook School, where George also studied before moving to Eton.

More Than a Royal School List

The educational journeys of the royals highlight an interesting fact: there is no single formula for success.

Eton, Gordonstoun and Lambrook have different traditions and educational approaches, yet each has played a role in shaping members of the royal family.

For students and parents, the bigger lesson is that choosing a school is not simply about reputation or famous alumni. Academic opportunities, teaching quality, values, extracurricular activities, environment and a child’s individual interests all matter.

Prince George’s arrival at Eton may be a royal milestone, but it also provides an opportunity to look beyond the palace gates — and understand how education has shaped generations of Britain’s royal family.
