UP’s Smart School Push: 14,429 Government Primary Schools Set for Digital Upgrade

Lucknow: Thousands of children studying in Uttar Pradesh government primary schools are set to experience more technology-enabled classrooms as the state government moves ahead with a ₹300-crore smart school programme covering 14,429 schools.

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the proposal on September 15, 2026, with the initiative aimed at expanding digital learning opportunities in schools run by the Basic Education Council. Each selected school has been allocated around ₹2.08 lakh for the smart-school component.

The planned facilities include internet connectivity, interactive teaching systems, computing devices, ICT infrastructure and curriculum-based digital content. The programme is expected to be implemented in phases, with schools selected based on factors including student enrolment.

For students, the initiative could mean a shift from conventional blackboard-based lessons towards more interactive learning. Digital content can support classroom teaching through videos, animations, worksheets and assessments, while teachers will receive training to use the technology effectively.

The government has also moved from the Cabinet announcement towards implementation. On September 20, the Basic Education Department issued a government order for upgrading the 14,429 schools. The order specifies modern interactive displays, digital learning resources, broadband connectivity and teacher training as components of the programme.

The initiative comes alongside other efforts to improve school infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh. Earlier in August, the state approved ₹604 crore for rebuilding and repairing 3,126 council-run primary and upper-primary schools.

For students and teachers, the smart-school programme represents an effort to bring digital resources closer to classrooms and expand technology-supported learning in government schools across the state.
