UGC-NET Faces Fresh Setback as NTA Orders Re-Examination for Three Subjects

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to conduct fresh examinations for three subjects of the June 2026 UGC-NET examination after a review found multiple errors in the question papers. The decision comes after candidates raised concerns regarding the accuracy and quality of questions in the affected papers.

The subjects included in the re-examination are English, Commerce and Sociology. According to the testing agency, a committee constituted to examine the complaints identified several types of errors, including factual inaccuracies, typographical mistakes, translation-related issues and incorrectly framed questions.

The review also reportedly found mistakes involving the names of prominent scholars and incorrectly presented book titles. In some cases, questions were found to have wording, grammatical and punctuation problems, raising concerns about their clarity and suitability for a national-level examination.

Fresh Tests Scheduled in September

The re-examinations for the three subjects have now been scheduled for September 9 and September 10.

The English examination will be conducted on September 9 from 9 am to noon, while the Commerce paper will take place on the same day from 3 pm to 6 pm. The Sociology examination will be held on September 10 from 9 am to noon.

Candidates who are required to appear for these fresh examinations will not have to pay an additional examination fee, according to NTA.

The agency’s decision means that candidates preparing for these three subjects will need to make fresh arrangements for the revised examination schedule. Students and researchers who had already prepared for the original test are expected to closely follow further instructions from NTA regarding examination centres, admit cards and other logistical details.

Answer Keys Withheld for Affected Subjects

NTA has also released provisional answer keys for 84 of the 87 UGC-NET subjects. However, the provisional answer keys for English, Commerce and Sociology have been withheld because these papers will now be conducted again.

The review also reportedly found that a number of questions in the affected papers had been repeated or closely resembled questions used in the 2024 examination, adding another concern to the issues identified during the assessment.

UGC-NET is conducted to determine eligibility for Assistant Professor positions and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), making accuracy and fairness in the examination process particularly important.

Candidates appearing for the three affected subjects should therefore rely on official NTA notifications for the revised examination schedule and other instructions, while continuing their preparation for the fresh tests.
