Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev Backs ‘One Nation, One Election’, Highlights Education Impact

Yoga guru Swami Ramdev has strongly supported the “One Nation, One Election” proposal, saying simultaneous elections could reduce disruptions to governance and give teachers more time to focus on students.

Speaking at a programme on the proposal in Haridwar on August 23, Ramdev said elections are held in different parts of the country throughout the year, requiring teachers and other government employees to undertake election duties. He argued that this takes educators away from classrooms and affects teaching time.

Ramdev said implementing simultaneous elections could help teachers devote more time to students and contribute to strengthening the education system. He also argued that frequent elections can slow development work because government machinery remains engaged in election-related responsibilities.

The education angle is particularly important for schools, where teachers are often assigned duties beyond classroom teaching during elections. Ramdev said reducing repeated election-related responsibilities could allow educators to concentrate more fully on teaching and learning.

He also said the proposal should be viewed from the perspective of national interest rather than partisan or regional politics. The issue remains part of a wider national debate over electoral reform.

For students, the key question is whether any change in the election cycle can ultimately improve classroom continuity, teaching time and delivery of development programmes directly affecting schools.
