KISS Presents ‘Ancestral Basket’ to Preserve Indigenous Food Traditions of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has presented Ancestral Basket: 50+ Recipes & Sustainable Food Traditions from Indigenous Odisha, a publication documenting more than 50 traditional recipes and highlighting the rich culinary heritage, indigenous knowledge, and sustainable food practices of Odisha’s Indigenous communities.

The publication is an outcome of two international research collaborations funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). These include Project TIGR2ESS (Transforming India’s Green Revolution by Research & Empowerment for Sustainable Food Supplies), led by the University of Cambridge, UK, and Project CHIRAG (Creative Hub for Innovation & Reciprocal Research & Action for Gender Equality), led by the University of East Anglia, UK, in collaboration with KISS, PRADAN, and Gram Vaani.

The initiative seeks to document and preserve traditional food knowledge at a time when many ancestral culinary practices are gradually disappearing. By recording recipes and sustainable food traditions, the publication aims to help pass this valuable knowledge on to future generations.

KISS acknowledged the contributions of Indigenous women, elders, farmers, and families whose recipes, experiences, and wisdom made the collection possible.

Through Ancestral Basket, KISS highlights the importance of safeguarding Indigenous cultural heritage, recognising community knowledge, and promoting sustainable food practices that have been passed down through generations.
