New Delhi: The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that no final decision has been taken on conducting NEET-UG in computer-based mode. The government said the proposal is under active consideration and the final decision will be based on recommendations of the Nandan Nilekani-led high-powered task force, constituted to strengthen India’s public examination system.
Responding to concerns over the recent NEET paper leak, the Centre highlighted several reforms, including stricter anti-cheating laws, enhanced security measures and the formation of the expert committee to recommend long-term examination reforms.
The government stated that stakeholders are evaluating both single-stage and two-stage computer-based examination models, similar to the JEE pattern. However, any change will be implemented only after carefully examining the committee’s recommendations.
The affidavit also noted that the National Testing Agency (NTA) has already shifted seven of its eight major examinations to computer-based testing. NEET-UG remains the only large-scale examination still conducted in pen-and-paper mode.
The Supreme Court is hearing petitions seeking stronger safeguards and greater transparency in the conduct of medical entrance examinations.
