INDIA’S TIMELESS LEGACY OF MEDICAL INNOVATION: From Maharishi Sushruta to the Global Pharmacy of the World

India has been a land of innovation, research, and scientific discovery since ancient times. Long before the rise of modern medicine, Indian scholars, physicians, and researchers were making remarkable contributions to healthcare, surgery, and medical science. Ancient texts such as the Vedas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Ayurveda contain numerous references to medical knowledge, healing practices, and surgical procedures that demonstrate India’s advanced understanding of health and human anatomy.
One of the most inspiring examples from Indian mythology is found in the Ramayana, where the Sanjivani herb was used to revive Lord Lakshman after he was critically injured in battle. While rooted in mythology, this story reflects the ancient Indian belief in the power of medicinal plants and advanced healing practices. It symbolizes a civilization that valued scientific inquiry and healthcare thousands of years ago.
Among India’s greatest contributions to medicine stands Maharishi Sushruta, widely revered as the “Father of Surgery” and the “Father of Plastic Surgery.” Believed to have lived around the 6th century BCE, Sushruta authored the Sushruta Samhita, one of the world’s earliest and most comprehensive medical treatises. This monumental work documented more than 300 surgical procedures, described over 120 surgical instruments, and laid down detailed principles of anatomy, wound management, fracture treatment, and reconstructive surgery.
One of Sushruta’s most remarkable achievements was the development of the forehead-flap rhinoplasty technique, a method of reconstructing the nose that became the foundation of modern plastic surgery. His pioneering work in reconstructive procedures was centuries ahead of its time and continues to be acknowledged by surgeons across the world.
Sushruta also described one of the earliest known methods of cataract surgery, known as “couching,” in which a specially designed curved needle was used to displace the clouded lens and improve vision. His surgical expertise extended to treating fractures, removing stones, wound care, and performing complex operations using sophisticated instruments. Ancient Indian physicians employed more than 100 different surgical tools, including scalpels, forceps, probes, and speculums, many of which were carefully sterilized before use—highlighting an advanced understanding of surgical hygiene.
The significance of Sushruta’s contributions continues to receive global recognition even today. Recently, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Scotland unveiled a bronze statue of Maharishi Sushruta, honouring his extraordinary contributions to surgery and medical science. This recognition is far more than a tribute to an individual; it is an acknowledgment of India’s civilizational legacy and its profound contribution to the advancement of human knowledge more than 2,500 years ago.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, one of the world’s oldest and most respected surgical institutions, chose to honour Sushruta because his work occupies a foundational place in the history of surgery. Historians across the world regard him as one of the earliest pioneers whose teachings influenced the evolution of surgical science.
